What are your operating hours?

Our operating hours are:

Afterschool: 3:00PM-5:30 PM

Monday-Friday.

Full day: 8:00AM-5:30PM

Do you provide snacks ?

Yes, we provide healthy snacks for the children during their time at Second Recess.

Afterschool:  Snack is provided upon arrival.

Full Day: Snack is at 9:00AM and 3:00PM

Is transportation provided to and from Second Recess?

For afterscool we currently pick up from:

Glen Arden Elementary, Estes

Elementary, Avery's Creek,

Koontz and MCPM. 

On full-day programs, transportation to and from Second Recess is the responsibility of the parents or guardians.

About US

Hello my name is Annette McDonald, the founder of Second Recess.  I created Second Recess to provide school-age children with a safe, welcoming place where they can be themselves, make friends, play, learn, and have fun. 

I have more than 20 years of experience in teaching and childcare.  After beginning my teaching career in 1997, i eventually settles in North Carolina and continued working with children while raising my family.  

Second Recess was created in August 2023 with the goal of giving parents peace of mind while their children enjoy a fun, inclusive environment.

In August of 2025, we added Sophie, our resident therapy pig!  Sophie visits Second Recess regularly and love interacting with the children.  She has quickly become a much-loved part of our Second Recess Family.
